- Check that the door is the correct size.
- Screw each hinge to the door frame with a single screw. If the screws don't line up with the old hinge holes in the frame, you will have to drill new holes - use a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws.
- If the new hinge doesn't fit the old recess exactly, rest it on the bottom of the recess and mark where it overlaps around the edges. Cut out the waste wood inside the line with a chisel and mallet.
- Fold the hinge open. The hinge pivots should protrude from the frame edge. Prop the door in the frame, resting on wedges so that there is the correct gap at the bottom. Mark the top and bottom of each hinge on the face of the door.
- Unscrew the hinges from the frame and lay them on the edge of the door, lined up with the pencil marks. Mark around the hinge flaps and use a straight edge to pencil the thickness of the flap on the edge of the door.
- Tap around the marked outline of the hinge with a chisel. Cut a series of slivers across the marked section, against the grain of the wood, at 5 mm (3/16 in) intervals - aim to make the cuts the same depth as the thickness of the hinge flap. With the bevel (angled edge) of the chisel facing down towards the waste wood, pare away the slivers.
- Check that the hinges fit flush with the edge. Fix with one screw per hinge so that you can make adjustments easily.
- Hold the door on wedges, at right angles to the frame, and fix the hinge flaps to the door frame, again with only one screw in each hinge.
- Check that the door opens and closes easily, then fit the other screws.
