Connecting Your Computer to...

Camcorder/Digital Still Camera

All digital still cameras have a method for connecting to a PC. The most common medium is the USB port. Using a single, easy-to-fit cable, you can transfer pictures in just a few seconds. Older PCs, without a USB port, will use the serial port, which operates at a slower rate. For connecting a camcorder to your computer, see the section on connecting VCRs.

Hi-Fi

The growth of 'music via the Internet' services such as Napster and Gnutella spawned the new MP3 portable music players. Consequently, hi-fi manufacturers are beginning to add computer connectivity to their equipment, although generally only in the very expensive, high-specification models.

Even though a PC may have the standard 'speaker out' and 'line in' connectors, the biggest obstacle for this connection may be the positioning of the appliances within the home. The most convenient method for bringing digital music to your hi-fi is to write (burn) your own CDs. However, not all older hi-fis can use these CDs, so it's wise to test a copied CD-ROM disk on your hi-fi before investing in a CD burner for your computer.
