Barium Meal

A technique in which the patient drinks a solution of barium so that it lines the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and upper parts of the large bowel. The radio-opaque barium shows up on x-rays, enabling the doctor to view any abnormalities such as hiatus hernia, gastric or duodenal ulcers, oesophageal strictures or tumours.
