Autoimmune Disease

A disorder in which the body's immune system is unable to distinguish between foreign substances and normal body tissue. As a result, antibodies are produced which attack and destroy body tissue that it mistakes for foreign matter. A number of conditions are now thought to be autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and Graves' disease (hyperthyroidism).
