Arrhythmia

An irregularity of the rhythm of the heart, caused by a disturbance of the electrical impulses that control the pattern of heart muscle contractions. A slow heartbeat is known as a bradycardia, whilst a fast heartbeat is called a tachycardia. Most arrhythmias may be treated with drugs but sometimes an artificial pacemaker is needed.
