An acute inflammation of the appendix. The first symptoms of appendicitis may include a severe pain in the centre of the abdomen, fever and vomiting. The pain then later moves to the lower right-hand side of the abdomen, and the area is extremely tender to the touch. If left untreated, an inflamed appendix may burst, causing peritonitis. Consequently, the appendix is usually removed in a simple operation known as an appendectomy.
