Ankylosis

A condition in which the bones of a joint are attached to each other, either by bone or fibrous tissue, and become immobile. For example, ankylosing spondylitis immobilises the joints of the backbone. This may be due to an inflammatory disease that has affected the joint over a long period, or may be a congenital condition.
