Adhesive Capsulitis

Also known as Frozen Shoulder.

A disorder in which the shoulder capsule becomes inflamed and stiff, severely restricting movement of the shoulder. The condition has three stages:

  1. Slow onset of pain, which may last from 6 weeks to 9 months. As the shoulder becomes more painful, it loses motion.
  2. A slow improvement of pain, but with continued immobility. This may last from 4 to 9 months.
  3. A recovery stage, in which the shoulder motion slowly returns toward normal. This generally lasts from 5 to 26 months.
