Viscous Coupling

A component used in all-wheel drive systems and automatic transmissions. It consists of a coupling in which the input and output shafts connect with thin, alternately spaced discs in a cylindrical chamber filled with a viscous fluid. This type of coupling is used to limit the speed difference between the two axles of a car or between the two outputs of a differential.
