Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

A number assigned by the manufacturer, found stamped onto a plate under the bonnet. It may additionally be found at the base of the windscreen on the passenger side, under the carpet by the driver's seat and/or etched on to the windows.

Vehicles manufactured in the EU have a 17 character VIN (consisting of numerals and letters), whilst those imported from outside Europe may be shorter.

The Vehicle Identification Number acts as a deterrent against theft, as it allows the police to identify a vehicle even if its number plates has been changed.
