Also known as Total Loss.
A term used to describe a vehicle that has been declared a total loss by an insurer following accident damage or theft. Most insurers will normally classify vehicles as beyond economical repair if the cost of repair is 60% or more of their pre-accident value.
A car that has been written off may legitimately be allowed back on the road after suitable repairs, depending on the classification of damage. Category 'A' or 'B' must never reappear on the road, whilst 'C' and 'D' may do so following proper repair, passing an independent structural examination.
