Three-Point Seatbelt

A type of seatbelt that has three mountings: two either side of the occupant's lap and one behind the shoulder, which is attached either to the seat or the car's body. A three-point belt helps to spread the forces met in a collision over the wearer's chest, pelvis and shoulders. As the upper body is restrained, head injuries are also less likely. All newly designed cars have been required to fit three-point belts in the rear seats since October 2004.
