Supplying your greenhouse with mains services will make it easier to work in and can extend the range of plants that may be grown, by allowing you to provide heat, light and water.
Water
Installing a water tap within the greenhouse can cut down hours of wasted time and effort, allowing you to water your plants quickly and easily without having to carry in water from outside. A greenhouse tap will also make it easy to set up an automatic watering system to keep your plants adequately watered even if you are away.
If your garden already has an outdoor water tap, you should be able to take a spur from this and run it to the greenhouse. An anti-siphoning device must be fitted in order to meet UK legal requirements. When running a water pipe to the greenhouse, make sure that it is buried at least 30 cm (12 in) deep so that it remains below frost level, and that any parts that lay above ground are well-lagged.
Electricity
An electricity supply can transform a greenhouse, providing lighting, heating, powered ventilation and timers. However, the installation of an outdoor supply should always be undertaken by a professional - never attempt to fit one yourself. Waterproof fittings and armoured cables should always be used for safety. Cables may be run underground to the greenhouse, or as a cheaper option, overhead; your electrician will be able to advise you on which option is more suitable for your situation.
