Working with Windows

It pays to give windows with wooden or metal frames a yearly check-up so you can cure any problems before they become expensive. Repaint bare wood or metal areas in the late spring when the frame is completely dry.

There are some other simple jobs you may want to carry out, such as replacing a cracked or broken window, or repairing a wooden frame that may be causing draughts.

Sash windows are an important feature of a period house and should be repaired rather than replaced if at all possible. Although the mechanism may look complicated, replacing a broken cord is something you can easily do yourself in a few hours.
