Accessing the Internet

The Internet originated in the 1970s with a handful of universities and government organisations passing information around in a private network. Having taken off in 1993-4 with the development of the World Wide Web, the Internet now comprises millions of pages of information on almost every conceivable subject, often including pictures, video clips, music files, and software. People without PCs can use digital and cable TV services to surf the Web.
