On Board Diagnostics (OBD)

In the past, a car's on board diagnostics unit consisted simply of a malfunction indicator light that would illuminate if a problem was detected. Nowadays, modern OBD units monitor the car for errors during normal vehicle operations, and store this information electronically. It can then be downloaded and displayed to the service personnel, who will then be able to rapidly identify and remedy malfunctions within the vehicle.
