MIB was established in 1946 to compensate the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced motorists. The bureau deals with all claims against uninsured motorists for personal injury and/or for damage to property and settles them as appropriate. It also has a scheme for dealing with claims against untraced hit and run drivers. Every insurer underwriting compulsory motor insurance is obliged, by virtue of the Road Traffic Act 1988, to be a member of MIB and to contribute to its funding.
