The differential transmits power from the engine into drive at the wheels, sharing the drive equally between the two wheels (either the back 2 or the front 2, depending on whether the vehicle is front or rear wheel drive). A limited-slip differential prevents a wheel on a slippery road surface from spinning whilst the other sits stationary. It does this by limiting the amount of drive sent to the wheel which has least grip to maintain momentum and stability. Limited slip ensures that some torque is always distributed to both wheels.
