Immobiliser

A security device designed to prevent thieves from stealing a vehicle even if they gain entry. There are two types of immobiliser: mechanical (such as a steering lock) or electronic. All new cars must include an electronic immobiliser by law. This forms part of the engine control unit (ECU), and prevents the car from being started unless it recognises signals from a transponder in the ignition key.
