An MP3 - MPEG Audio Layer-3 - is a computer file format that stores audio files in such a way that it keeps the size of the file relatively small (depending on length) but also keeps the quality of the sound as close to the original as possible.

The final goal of MP3 was to create the same sound quality as a CD, but reduce the size by a factor of anywhere from 10 to 14 times.
