Introduction

Reasonable accuracy in measurement and wood cutting is needed. An assistant can often be helpful.

When creating a new room, you have to meet the requirements of the Building Regulations (including adequate fire resistance, light and ventilation). Check with your local council that your plans are OK.

The ability to build a simple internal partition wall opens up a lot of home-improvement possibilities.

A non-loadbearing internal partition wall consists of two main parts: a timber framework secured to the walls, floor and ceiling, with a covering (usually plasterboard) on either side.

Being able to construct partition walls gives you the opportunity to make more use out of large rooms. For example, you can create...

  • an extra bedroom (making two bedrooms out of one)
  • an en-suite bathroom
  • an internal porch
  • a downstairs cloakroom
  • a utility room (by dividing off part of a kitchen).
