Each winning lottery combination is a unique event, and any combination is just as likely to come up on draw night as another. So although it might be interesting to note which numbers haven't come up in a while, or which numbers seem to be picked most often, it won't (in theory) help you pick a winning ticket.
So although there is no real way to pick the winning numbers, there IS a way to maximise your jackpot payout if you DO win.

There are a number of popular lottery ticket number choices that thousands of people pick. For example, there are more than 10,000 tickets bought each draw with the combination 1,2,3,4,5,6. So imagine if you won on this ticket - you would have to share your jackpot prize with over 10,000 people, which could mean that your total jackpot payout would be a measly £1,000!
Many other sequences have a way above average subscription. For example, last weeks numbers, last weeks plus or minus one, consecutive numbers, equally spaced numbers, or numbers that form patterns on the lottery slip.
This was demonstrated in January 1995, when 133 people won the six number jackpot and picked up a (relatively) pathetic £122,510 each. This happened because the numbers that they chose formed a regular pattern on the lottery form, one that they used to save time in filling in their slips at the terminals.
So the trick is to try to make sure that you choose as unique a combination as possible. Try to include high numbers above 31, as this will rule out most common dates. This strategy won't just benefit you on the jackpot, but also if you match 4 or 5 or 5 + bonus, and will give you a much higher than average payout. Good luck!
