The ancient region of Cappadocia lies in central Anatolia, between the cities of Nevsehir, Kayseri and Nigde. The region has the most fantastically surreal landscape, formed by ancient floods and winds that have partially eroded a volcanic based plateau.
Three million years ago, violent eruptions of the volcanoes Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan covered the surrounding plateau with tufa (volcanic ash). As the soft tufa eroded, the basalt stones remained, forming conical structures reaching up to 150 feet into the sky. The local people called these unique rock formations 'Fairy Chimneys', a name that has endured throughout the ages.
The landscape of Cappadocia defies description. Only on visiting and immersing in its atmosphere, colours and luminance can one truly appreciate its unique beauty.
