Sossusvlei Sand Dunes

Location: Namibia

Sossusvlei is a remarkable area within the Namib Naukluft National Park. It is a huge clay pan enclosed by towering mountains of red sand dunes, some of the highest in the world, standing at over 1,000 feet.

The red colour of the dunes is a result of the high concentration of iron oxide in the sand. If you view them when the sun is low (at sunrise or sunset), the colours are accentuated against the shadows cast on the dunes, thus creating one of the most remarkable sights you can ever hope to see.
