Camel racing is a popular sport in Australia, the Middle East, and Africa. Professional camel racing, like horse racing, is an event for betting and tourist attraction.
Critics
Recent human rights issues have called for the investigation of child slave camel jockeys in the Middle East. These are very young boys from South Asia, particularly Bangladesh and Pakistan. Whilst official policies are in place requiring a minimum weight of 45 kg (100 lbs), these restrictions are ignored by some in the racing industry. In early 2005, a plan was suggested to use robot jockeys in place of the their traditional human counterparts.
