Spread betting offers a great alternative to fixed odds bookmaking. Spreads are offered on all horseraces in the UK with a whole host of bets available ranging from backing or laying an individual horse to a range of bets across the whole card.
Double Card Numbers
A prediction based on the total of the winners' racecard numbers multiplied by two. For example if the winners of a meeting at Goodwood were numbers 3,6,12,7,10 and 1 (a total of 39) the result would be 78.
Favourites
A prediction on how the named favourites will perform at a particular meeting. This is a performance index with 25 points awarded for a winning favourite, 10 if it comes second and 5 for third. If there are joint or co-favourites the horse with the lowest race card number is considered the favourite.
Starting Prices
This is a market based on the aggregate starting prices (SPs) for the winners at a particular meeting. For example, a 5/1 winner is worth 5 points and a 10/1 winner worth 10 points. Any starting price in excess of 50-1 is treated as 50-1.
Where a starting price is not a whole number, the price is usually rounded to the nearest first decimal place (halves going up), so 9/4 (2.25) would be worth 2.3 points.
Winning Distances
A prediction based on the total winning margins (distance between the 1st and 2nd placed horses) at a particular meeting. The official distances are those given by the judge as the horses pass the post. The maximum winning distance for a Flat Race is usually 12 lengths, with 30 lengths for National Hunt races. Distances under a length are recorded as follows:
- Short Head = 0.1 of a length
- Head = 0.2 of a length
- Neck = 0.3 of a length
- Half a length = 0.5 of a length
