Motor Racing Spread Bets

There is an eager market for Formula 1 betting, and as such the spread firms offer many bets both on single races and the season as a whole. Bets on each race include who will win the race, the best performing constructors, match bets (how far one driver will beat another by) and bets on qualifying (who will get pole position). We take a look at the more popular bets here:

Drivers Season Points

At the start of the Formula 1 season, the spread firm predicts how many points each driver will get. This gives you the opportunity to predict just how well a driver is going to perform over the entire season and not just individual races. Points are allocated per race:

  • 10 for 1st place,
  • 8 for 2nd place,
  • 6 for 3rd place,
  • 5 for 4th place,
  • 4 for 5th place,
  • 3 for 6th place,
  • 2 for 7th place,
  • 1 for 8th place.

See our article on Performance Index Bets for a worked example.

Drivers Points Match Bet

This is where the spread firm pits two drivers against each other in a race, making one as the favourite over the other. The driver that finishes ahead of the other will be awarded 10 points as well as 2 points per position he wins by.

If a driver retires, his position will be classed at that point. For example, he is the fourth man to spin off, crash or retire in a 20 man race, he will be placed 16th.

Individual Race Qualifying Index

A bet may be offered about the performance of driver in both in qualifying and individual races, awarding points according to official finishing positions.

  • 1st = 25 points
  • 2nd = 10 points
  • 3rd = 5 points

Classified Finishers

A prediction on the number of classified finishers in a particular race.

Winning Margin

A market based on the margin of victory, measured in seconds, in a particular race. The maximum result is often set to 60 seconds.

Constructor Points

A prediction on the total points accumulated by a particular team over the season.

Constructor Match Bet

A prediction on the total points difference between two quoted teams, over the season.
