Whilst having a bet can be fun, we should always remember that every wager could lose as well as win. The key to betting sensibly is self-control, and you might like to consider the following tips:
- Betting should be entertaining and not seen as a way of making money.
- Make a limit and stick to it. For example, on a day out at the races, decide on a certain betting limit and include it as part of the cost of the day. In this way, any winnings are a bonus, and any losses are part of the costs.
- Don't try to make up any losses by continuing to bet. This will only result in greater losses. Stick to your limit.
- Never bet more than you can afford to lose. You alone can judge this.
- Stay in control of your betting.
If you think you may have a betting problem, there are a number of organisations that can help. Gamblers Anonymous (08700 50 88 80) offers a 12 step programme to help compulsive gamblers, and Gamcare (0845 6000 133) provides a confidential telephone counselling helpline for anyone who is concerned about their own, or someone else's betting.
