National Savings and Investments

National Savings and Investments are a suite of products issued by the UK Government, and as such are generally seen as 'low-risk' ways of making your money grow. By investing in these products, you are effectively lending to the Government - so in theory, NS&I products are also good for the economy of the country.

The different products are aimed at people with different circumstances. You may be more focused on generating income, or on seeing growth. Some products are aimed at certain types of taxpayer.

These products are aimed at mid to long-term investors looking for a low-risk way of generating money. Over the longer term, stock-market investments such as unit trusts and shares tend to give a higher return than deposit-based products but are more risky, and you can't be sure of getting your original investment back. All NS&I products are deposit-based, which means you will always get out at least as much as you put in.

It is worth comparing the performance of these products against their commercial equivalents before deciding which products to go with. Some NS&I products offer tax-free interest in certain circumstances, which may be enough to tip the balance in their favour.

For more information on these types of products, visit the National Savings And Investments website at http://www.nationalsavings.co.uk/.
