Background
UKIP (pronounced "you-kip") was founded in 1993 by Alan Sked to seek the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Although most of the British public remain sceptical of the EU, UKIP fared comparatively poorly at the polls until 2004, when they won 12 seats at the European Parliament election.
The party currently has 35 local councillors, but despite fielding 495 candidates, it failed to win any seats at the General Election in 2005.
