Background
The Democratic Unionist Party was established in the 1970's by Ian Paisley and Desmond Boal.
In 2004, the DUP became the largest political party in the Northern Ireland Assembly (now suspended), after it won 33 seats. It is also the largest Northern Ireland party in the House of Commons, with 9 seats, and the fourth largest party in terms of seats after Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
