Background
The Green Party is committed to ecological sustainability, social and economic justice, and global peace. Founded in 1972 as the Ecology Party, it became formally known as the Green Party during the 1980s, when it enjoyed brief spell of success, winning 2 million votes in the 1989 European Election. However, the party was unable to maintain this success, and seems to have fallen out of the limelight to an extent, although many of the mainstream political parties have adopted some of their policies.
The party split amicably in the 1990's, forming the Green Party of England and Wales, the Scottish Green Party, and the Green Party in Northern Ireland.
The Green Party of England and Wales currently has 2 elected MEPs (Members of the European Parliament), Dr. Caroline Lucas (South East England) and Jean Lambert (London), and one member in the House of Lords: Lord Beaumont of Whitley. The Scottish Green Party has 7 members in the Scottish Parliament.
