The Princess Bride (1987)

Position: 99

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

Director: Rob Reiner

Cast: Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, André the Giant, Mandy Patinkin, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Peter Falk, Chris Sarandon, Fred Savage, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, Mel Smith

Plot: When a young boy (Fred Savage) falls ill, his grandfather (Peter Falk) comes by to cheer him up, bringing along a storybook. Doubtful at first, the boy soon begins to enjoy the story of the love between the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright) and the farmboy Westley (Cary Elwes); a love cruelly interrupted by Westley's tragic apparent death at sea whilst seeking his fortune. Heartbroken, Buttercup swears never to love again, but accepts the marriage proposal of the rich and handsome (and slimy) Prince Humperdinck, heir to the throne of Florin. She is kidnapped by a trio of rogues; Vizzini (Wallace Shawn) provides the brains, Fezzik (André the Giant) provides the brawn, and Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) provides the sword. As they sail away toward the Cliffs of Insanity, they notice they are being pursued by a man in black...and the adventure begins.

A story filled with rhyming giants, exotically-accented swordsmen, sadistic torturers, vile swamps, Rodents of Unusual Size, and a somewhat embittered miracle worker, proving that death is no barrier to true love.
